Extinction of quality programs
"Where are all the good TV programs? " is the latest lamentation arising from Bharat Varsha.
Intellectuals and people-with-too-much-spare-time (not necessarily mutually exclusive ) are wringing hands in despair to somehow save this terrible vanishing of nourishing serials from TV ecology and stop the proliferation of saas - bahu soap and reality television imported from phoren, which threaten to turn Indians into mindless zombies plotting internecine feuds or getting makeovers. Here are my thoughts on it,
1) Considering the amount of make up involved, this is a devious plot hatched by Lakme/Revlon/Elle, this is ofcourse a logical follow up to rigging Miss Universe/Miss World/Miss Jhumri Tallaya to ensure that Indians beauties (?) are selected. This propaganda must be countered at all costs.
2) Makeovers are another attempt to turn Virile Indian Males to Metrosexuals, this is accompanied by selection of ShahRukh Khan as model for Lux. This plan is hatched by MBA who may be gay (if male) or role-playing dominatrix (if female)
This is blamed on liberalization, this is ofcourse true but it is more nuanced.
In a free market (or whatever goes for free market) demand ensures any supply. However there may be different consumers for different kind of products. For simplification sake I will enumerate two kinds , there exist more but can be correlated with two types.
One is Gullible and Tasteless (GAT) , other is Pesky Nuts (PNuts), as is obvious the cost for meeting GAT's demand is much less than PNuts and therefore GAT dominates, this continues until there is so much glut for GATs causing a decrease in profitability and catering to PNut market is attractive. This theory can be applied to various markets, with reasonable accuracy.
According to this theory considering the potential for importing serials and boredom of housewives it may be some time before PNut segment is attractive.
PS. Notwithstanding appearences, I am not one with too much spare time. I am working on serious research, the aim of which is to find out how long can I get paid without doing any actual work.
