Strength of Hinduism

Sandeep in this post writes, what I think should be the answer to "Hinduism has survived for blah blah years and will continue to survive",

"... I've read and heard several intelligent, educated people talking about the innate strength of Hinduism that has enabled it to survive so long and will continue to, on the basis of that strength. I can only laugh. These people claim to have read the Gita but they are either lying it or they haven't understood its essence for one of the very first things that Krishna does is to chastise Arjuna to cast away his meek-heartedness and fight for his duty. A majority of us have no clue of what duty faces us and our meek-heartedness forbids us to even think about it. And we therefore sit happily in our self-imposed stupor, chanting the strength of Hinduism Mantra. ......"

Completely agree with this. Hinduism survived for so many years not because it was ordained by God, but because there was a vitality in it.

Hinduism had no prophets to reveal divine words, what it had rishis who sought and founded Hinduism
Where are Rishis of today ? Hinduism is rusting and if left in the attic for too long, will become a memory of the past.
It will not happen tomorrow or even next century, but this will happen. It will be first of its kind, a civilization which became extinct just because the people wouldn't give a damn.

PS. This is easily among one of the better posts that I have read.

PPS. I am not schmoozing.

Fifty eight years old anguish

When I was young, I happened to meet an accident in which one of my tooth got chipped. In subsequent years, when I went without any romance in my life, I shifted the blame on that chipped tooth for my situation. It was only after I was old, I realized that the reason I was luckless in matters of amour was a combination of my ugly face and insipid personality.

This experience of mine is somewhat similar to sentiment of Primary red in this post, where he betrays a sense of anguish for the partition.

Incidentally I used to experience same anguish while approaching the topic of partition. After all , Partition was the great betrayal by Jinnah of freedom movement, an insult to martyrs.

Then again as a Hindu, partition was hardly something which could have been pleasant to accept.

But as I realized that chipped tooth was not the root cause, so also my feeling about partition changed . Sure it is not pleasant even now, but it is something I can explore and analyze.
For that thanks should go for Mr. L. K. Advani, who rescued Jinnah.

Here is my take, what happened (that is partition) was not inevitable, it was also not something which happened all of sudden. I will explore the idea behind Pakistan in a later post, however let it be said that Partition was wrong not only because it was betrayal of shared heritage or freedom movement, but the very idea behind it was convoluted. That is the reason , it is in the shape it is now.

Only if Indian leadership were more capable and less delusional, India would have a much safer neighbourhood.

Here is one minor quibble though, Primary Red referred to one millennium of shared heritage, assuming it was not a typo, I think it should have been whatever is the age of Indian civilization, for the reason that Muslims are not genetically different from Hindus, and their conversion does not invalidate the common heritage prior to Islam.

Primary red is one of the oddity in Secular crowd ofcourse,I hope he remains so.

Another quibble is that he divided the Indians into secularists and religious bigots, since I am not first, I must be the latter.Oh Well !

Nitin has also posted on it.

I do not know Amit Varma hardly seems like one of Kabootar loving people.

May be he was trying to be ironical, or showing that famous tehzeeb.

Programming the System

"While C++ can prevent mistakes, it can not prevent frauds."

Bjarne Stroustrup (The C++ Programming Language)

This is true for all the real world systems ofcourse. So what is the solution ? Why do what programmers do.Good old bug fixing here and there, along with using good desing patterns.
I think engineers in generals and programmers in particular should make good economists, but reverse may not be true.

One dirty word

Sandeep says Patriotism is a dirty word.

Well it has been like that for long time !

For concept of nation is very much against internationalist ideologies like communism. What wonder therefore when our elites brainwashed by English education undermine nationalism calling it jingoism.

That is one of the reasons I am uncomfortable with libertarianism, I suspect that it is internationalist in nature, and in their zeal to promote the ideology libertarian will end up undermining nationalism. This is not to say that cartel will do this , only warning that even Anakyn skywalkers do turn into Darth Vaders.

The idea behind India

In previous post, I tried to establish the point that all modern nation states have some basis.
So what is that idea, that basis behind India.

Here, I will like to make one more assertion (which should be obvious), nations do not come into existence out of spontaneous order, nor national identities self-evident.
This means that nations have to be formed and national identities have to be defined.

Ravi Kiran indicated that much. I do not agree with him completely ofcourse, because by arguing that religious nationalist are digging from, for the basis of India, he is implying that secular nationalists (like him I suppose) are trying to construct Indian identity on principles which are completely disconnected with Indian civilization, with relying on past only sake of tokenism much like congress did.Relying on cricket to define national identity is not one of best ways ofcourse, for the reason, We get beaten by Pakistan on regular basis.

Whether a nation thrives or disintegrates depends as much as on the idea it is formed, as the external circumstances. Therefore nation based on racial or tribal identities are considered to be most stable, however as the societies evolve the more evolved ideas play a part in identity.
One of the examples is USA.

So what defines India ?

Is it language ? No, because India is a nation of such diverse group of languages, a language can not be sole basis for nation. At most, it can enable communication between different regions.
For example Hindi and English.

Is it race? No, in fact I have concluded that genetics can not be used except in limited case for understanding India.
Is it religion ? Yes and No, Yes if it taken in Indian context, No if in narrow western context.

So what is it ? Our Indian culture, our shared heritage ?

What is Indian heritage ? People will say it is tolerance , equal respect for all religions, I think it is something more exalted than that. The essence of India is quest for eternal truth. This is expressed in Vedas , it is there in Bhagvad Gita, it is in concept of dharma. It is Gautham Buddha and Shankara. It resonated in Sangam and Carnatic Sangeet. Indian religion , Indian philosophy, Indian Science, all are manifestations of this quest.
Kabeer, Mira, Chaitanya, Raheem and Raamahans all define what is Indian. Great souls like Swami Vivekananda and Guru Aurobindo realized this.
Subramanyan Bharathi expressed this in his poems.
This was the ideal for which our revolutionary sacrificed their happiness, their wealth their very life with nothing but exalted joy.

And this is the reason why Indians are inherently tolerant, a civilization which seeks the essence of life has no time for inquisition.Even in our dogma we did not seek destruction of others.Even at lowest points we did not turn out who sought refugee.Even when we became stagnant , we did not reject ideas because they were foreign. In this land where enlightenment was sought , even nobler expression of atheism like Buddhism was endorsed. We did not persecute religions on the contrary we delighted on the expressions of spirituality.

When Swami Vivekananda said that India is a religious county, he was referring to this truth.

This in my view is the essence of India. This is what binds every Indian of whatever religion on region at sublime level. It is more than worth preserving, it is also more than worth cherishing. The only justice to this heritage is when we emulate it. Only after it has been realized in practice, we will measure up to our ancestors then we can claim to be rightful heir of a exalted culture.

Incidentally that is what I meant when in this post, I expressed dissatisfaction with state of Hinduism. For Hinduism is not mere path to devotion, it is inseparable from essence of India. Hinduism is quest for truth. Kingdoms do not make a civilization and even institutions are secondary.

What matters is spirit of questioning and seeking for answers, in other words argumentative spirit, it is what unifies science or philosophy or religion for that matter. It is therefore natural to assert that in order to realize our ideal, scientific exploration is as essential as religious enlightenment.

This is a Indian view and opposite of western view which considers science and religion on opposite poles. This has been expressed in Ramayana and Mahabharatha, when characters have taken independent often contrary position. In my opinion, for Indian civilization to be of relevance, this spirit must be reawaken.

The idea behind Nation - State

This is first of many posts exploring idea behind India as Nation - State

It is a contradiction of modern nation states, as much as they are affirmation of what is common among its people, it is also, to some extent, a negation, an exclusion from another idea.

States were not always of nation-states form.

Greeks had city states, Athens , Sparta etc. Although all if them had same religion and same pantheon of Gods and goddesses, they had different school of thoughts. There school of philosophies were completely contradictory in some cases, the cities tried to organize their social structure in accordance with the underpinning philosophy. Indeed the very existence of city- states was affirmation of different schools.
Greeks were fiercely independent spirit and zealously guarded their identity.
Their arts, their institutions were reflection of their identity.
Athens was the most celebrated state ofcourse and is immortal in history for diverse schools which originated from its soil, in a way defining western civilization.
Spartan were radically different, they adapted a austere militarily lifestyle.
The Greek states were notoriously disunited, except for the Persian wars, the spent much of their energy fighting among themselves, ultimately allowing Romans to take over.

Romans who succeeded the Greeks adapted Greek schools, roman philosophy was an evolution of greek.Where Roman excelled Greeks were in establishing political institutions.
Although Greek had democracy, Romans were able to evolve institutions harmonized with democracy. It is a different matter that republic was subverted first by dictators and later Caesars.

Here it must be mentioned that although Greeks and Romans had evolved philosophy, they nevertheless were not egalitarian, despite presence of egalitarian school. Their societies had different classes of citizens, then their were slaves and then there was rest of Europe, which was considered to be barbarian. One of the goals of ambitious Romans was to bring civilization to Europe. This was to be repeated by European later.

Ancient Europe was different from Greeks or for that matter Romans. At that time Europe still in nomadic stage and culturally much more primitive than ancient civilizations. The Europeans were still divided on the basis of tribal identity. The territory exchanged between tribes, and there was a turbulent relation with Romans. The nature of religion was essentially naturalistic, and the pantheon was humanization of various forces of nature. Religion was an extension of tribal identity and evolved as fortune of tribes changed.

Rise of Mithraism (or Sun - God) during the turn of 1st century established a common unifying aspect to some extent , however this religion belonged to elites, who embraced it under Roman influence. The masses continued to worship previous deities, as the later religion was not proletyzing.
This changed however after Roman emperor Constantine embraced Christianity, suitably modified with Mithraism, as the official religion of Roman empire. New testament enjoined believers to spread the gospel, in order to rescue non believers from eternal damnation. Under roman patronage and zealous evangelists, Christianity caught on and by 9th century most of Europe was Christian. In this respect, this was the first time when state and religion worked together to reinforce each other. This was to be repeated to various degrees of success during colonization of Africa and Asia.
Thus Christianity provided first basis for unification, it was further strengthened by establishment of first holy roman empire. However the tribal identity in Europe still remained.

The unification was complete after the establishment of Pope as temporal authority over Europe
In order to secure his position, Pope Urban II gave a call for Crusade and thus started a turbulent period. While as long as crusades were succeeding, Popes were able to reign supreme , however after the failure of Christians to secure Holy Land, this authority eroded. Increasing assertiveness of local rules (owing their allegiance to tribal and linguistic identities), resentment with Pope, along with period of enlightenment , the primitive contours of modern European nations started taking shape. Various cities emerged as centres of cultural and scientific re awakening. This with rise of middle class who were eager to establish a identity in contrast to kingdom , in order to challenge divinity of Kings was what ultimately established various nation- states.

Britain, owing to its geography was first to define itself. Holland, France and Spain followed.
Germany and Italy established thanks to the efforts of Bismarck and Garibaldi. Eastern Europe states would come only after dismemberment of Austria-Hungary empire.

Therefore European nation states can be deconstructed roughly in the following order.Tribal & Linguistic(French, German), then secretarian (i.e protestant, catholic etc) and then religion (i.e Christianity)

American countries including US were defined by immigration of Europeans to the new world.
Depending on the circumstance of immigration the borders were defined. However culturally south America remains fluid and more or less homogeneous. Revolutions in Latin America have always been launched across the continent and the politics in general follow the same trend.

While Latin America was defined by immigration of Hispanic, USA was defined by immigration of English puritans. The immigrants thrived because of opportunities available and soon developed separate identity, which found expression in American war on independence.
This restive energy was the result behind rapid expansion of US from 12 states to a transcontinental entity.Since then American constitution is the guiding force behind USA.

Therefore the USA can be deconstructed roughly as following immigration (from Europe except Spain), religion (puritanism), and the constitution.

Canada came on its own only after Anglo- American war of 1812, after repelling USA incursion, it realized itself as a separate entity.

There are two conclusion from above.

1) Nation-States are relatively modern construct.

2) It is primarily a western construct.

I think it can be safely said then that Modern nation state are reaffirmation of some idea, this idea may be tribal or linguistic affinity, may be same religion. However in case of India none of this holds true, the idea behind India is much more refined or abstract. I will try to explore it in later post.

I have not covered other ancient civilizations , however the point remains.
In ancient times territories changed hands between different Kingdom and therefore the nature of states could be said to empire-states rather than nation state.
Civilizations waxed and waned according to the territory, but state never coincided with Civilization. However in general there was continuity between civilizations.

Bug is security feature ?

Chinese Google filter only works if you can spell.

Huh! Big brother is going to be really annoyed !

May be China should outlaw incorrect spellings as well, that should work !

The worm turns

After showing his true colours,
The exalted leader of our neighbouring country accuses India of not moving forward, on pretext of terrorism.
Easily the most humourous news, on second thoughts the year has just started and the enlightened dictator has a sense of humour, which is unintentional ofcourse.

Up the creek with no paddle

Hamas victory is a bad news for Palestinian people.

Frankly speaking to expect Israel to talk with an entity whose aim is destruction of Israel is delusional.

I think it will be messy, when it comes.

But I think Palestinians are themselves to be blamed for this. After all, they elected a bunch of thugs.

The curious case of Mulford

So, why did Mulford queer the pitch, when everything was supposed to be headed in right direction.

Was it ol' good cop-bad cop routine ?

It is unlikely, as for all purposes India was going to vote against Iran, at any rate, despite portestations of our comrades ?

In this respect,a behind the door diplomacy should have been sufficient.

What I think is it was a deliberate attempt to deflate India, either this or Mulford is a gasbag like Natwar Singh or India was rethinking about its stance.

Whatever be the reason such statements are self-defeating even if they state what is obvious.

Forked tongue speaketh the truth

Via Indian Express,

Musharraf: If we are enemies, how can we do business together?

".... The 250-strong audience seemed to lap it up. So much so that when the mask slipped and the general reverted to form to retort, “If we are enemies, how can we do business together? Nations are like individuals. If we are killing each other, how can you expect other interests to bring us together” (in response to a question from an Indian member of the audience as why he does not do more to promote trade and economic relations with India), few seemed to see that as an example of doublespeak ......"

Truer words were never spoken.....

But will our people notice, No !

Reminds me of a particular episode from Lemony Snicket's

The subversion continues

Via Indian Express,

Congress clings on, Bangalore ball back in Raj Bhavan

It is amazing the way Congress has been subverting democratic norms since it came to power,
and there is hardly an outrage in the secular media or our elites. Sure there is a lot of disapproval, but it has the same gravity as if Shoaib Akhtar has bowled a nasty one.

After all , there are more important issues like poverty, world peace and manicures, eternal vigilance be damned

A good choice and a bad choice

Mr. Rajnath Singh has in recent reorganization appointed Mr. Narendra Modi and Mr. Vinay Katiyar in the organization.

While I endorse Mr. Modi, I do not think appointing Mr. Katiyar was such a good idea.

The reason is while Mr. Modi has proven to be a excellent administrator, Mr Katiyar's record is less impressive. He is neither a good administrator, nor a very good vote catcher.

What is more his remarks against Ms Sonia Gandhi proves that he is not very articulate either.

Indian Express is not happy, I will say this is a good thing

Where I renounce Science

I have come to the conclusion that Science is after all a bad thing.

That knowledge is indeed a forbidden fruit, and it was a sin to defy God.

That Holocaust can be directly blamed on genetics.

That most of the science has resulted in more lethal weapons.

That it is much easier to cause havoc and destruction, thaks to science.

That most of the scientific theories have resulted in genocide on large scales.

That Science can be interpreted to support pernicous agendas.

Hence eschew science, reject knowledge.

Only ignorance is the path to Moksha.

Does above seem insane ?

Then how can atheists give almost similar arguements for religion and be considered rational.

When I started blogging, I had a simple aim.

I was aiming not for excellence, I was aiming for mediocrity and I am satisfied to note that I have consistently maintained that level, at which blandish reigns. As I continue I can be counted on maintaining the tradition.

To encourage people to visit this blog, I promise that I will assure that everyone receive one Indibloggies awards, this I will achieve by threatening physical existence of the presenter.

The biggest con of them all.

So what explains the success of Socialism.

When I say success, I do not mean as a economic model, but as a political movement.

I think the answer would be Ponzi scheme.

Why is socialism a Ponzi Scheme. ?

Because it seeks equal distribution of wealth.

This means in essence rob Peter to Pay Paul.

As is obvious Paul will endorse this Ponzi scheme, but its biggest shortcoming is that it can work only when Peter produces and in enough amount to cover Paul's deficit and there is nothing in Human behaviour to suggest that Peter will do so.

The most likely scenario will be that Peter will transform into Paul and soon it will be a society of Paul's.

Paul is ofcourse in everyone of us, it is our greed or narrow self interest , however it is kept in check by morality or ethics or things like honesty.

However Socialism provides a escape route out of pesky things like morality and ethics, this escape route is the concept of "the other", in this case being the rich people.

The logic is inescapable, if rich could be coerced to pay for us, what could be better than this.
This ofcourse will mean that there will be no drive to be rich because it is punished or resort to corruption , the result will be that soon it will be turn of Paul to become Peter.

By appealing to a group which excludes us, we will be punished for being wealthy. This will happen because wealth is relative.

This can be competitive lemmingness or racing to the bottom or morality of "Bonnie and Clyde", but the end effect will be same, a stagnant society.

Hypocrisy of Google

Via lgf,

Two version of google,
What Google has done in despicable in my view.

But is it an indictment of capiltalism.

It depends on point of view.

If Capitalism is considered to be perfect, thrice omni system impervious to any subversion, then ofcourse it will be wrong.

However Capitalism in my view is a tool, it is not perfect though it is the best possible.

It can be subverted easily and that is why wisdom is required to wield it.

I think in some respect crony and unethical capitalism is a worse enemy of ethical capitalism as compared to communism

Communist paradox

Communists oppose reform in Delhi, but support it in Kolkata.

How can this be explained ?

Four legs good, two legs better !

Relevance of AIT

Michael Higgins asks, "Shouldn't Indians be thinking about the future, rather than be obsessed with past." ?

This , ofcourse is a question frequently asked ,often rhetorically. In my view this question is at best a diversionary tactics of people ignorant of history and dismissive of past (which means most of the educated, Indians or otherwise).

So what is the relevance of discussing AIT ?

People who oppose the very discussion argue in following way.

1) Discussion over AIT distracts from real issues like poverty, hunger, proliferation etc.
2) AIT is an academic issue and not worth wasting time upon
3) There have been numerous invasion on India, so AIT must be true.

Here is my rebuttal

1) arguments like first one set up false dichotomy. Discussion on AIT in particular and on History in general need not distract from discussion on any other issue. In fact, any society in general has to face a multitude of discussion at a given time, a successful society is one in which these discussion can be carried out simultaneously. Or to present another view even thought AIT was not as big a political debate during first five decades, poverty and hunger being the issue that were sought to be solved and yet the problems persist.

2)Academic in this sense means something which doesn't have any practical application, for example in airplane design, this is most certainly true for AIT. However the conclusion that anything which can not be used in practical application is useless is a dangerous and yet popular opinion in modern times, I will try to explain it why.
History is study to past, now the question is to what end ? The answer in my view is analyzing and understanding that past provides us with a perspective, sort of a big picture about the present, it gives us precedence and information for us to make judgment upon whether our current system will work or not.

Present civilization, in whatever aspect is not a disconnect from past. Instead every facet from science to philosophy, from religion to ethics and from governance to jurisprudence has its foundation on the past. Modern rationalism and atheism are results of a continuous progression in a particular school of philosophy. So is the independence of legislature and judiciary , or for that matter exclusion of state and church.

Here it is not as important as what the system is specifically about, it could be about philosophy , economics , governance , religion or politics. More important is that with past data we can critically test the robustness of our current system as well as the thought process.
For example we know high taxes will not work considering the example of Rome.
Or Why it is a bad idea to ask starving people to eat cake.
Or Why burning a city for artistic inspiration is not a good idea.
Or How is it possible to establish an empire, even if you are a ugly Brahmin.
Or What happens when a nation is disunited.
Or Why those who forget past repeat it.

I can give countless examples to show why studying history is a good idea.
Which brings us to the specific question of why discussion on AIT is important and will always be political in nature

For that I must introduce Aryan Invasion Theory.

According to AIT, Aryans which was particular kind * of group from particular place * at a particular period* of history invaded India riding on chariots and annihilated the existing civilization , supplanting fully culture, language of India, the vanquished group settled to south.

The new group had a different religion from the defeated group, this new religion and its pantheon replaced the older religion and pantheon to a large extent and was somehow modified /adapted to suit the warmer climes.

First point : AIT is not about invasion in general. It is about invasion by some specific group at some specific time.

Second Point : AIT was not any routine invasion either (if that is possible), AIT completely changed the civilization at that time.

There may be two ground to oppose AIT, on the basis of data, on its conclusions.
Both are related. Some people concentrate on the first , some on the second and some on both.

Veer Savarkar accepted AIT but rejected that Indic civilization was imported, instead he argued that it was organic.

Now here it is necessary to go into background.

Indologists like Max Mueller were deeply impressed by the ancient work of India and Sanskrit language. In addition similarities between Sanskrit and European language was noticed by Scholars (I don't know for myself, may be Jaffna or JK could write on it). As was the practice of the 19th century, when history was constructed through euro- centric and racial point of view, it was concluded that the Indic civilization could have been explained by invasion of Europe based group. The word Aryan (which indicated noble) was taken out of context to denote the attackers.
Similarly it was proposed that based on the difference of color pigmentation, Dravidian (again a word taken out of context) were the original inhabitant.

In the original AIT , it was proposed that Dravidian were tribal and it was Aryans who brought civilization. This piece of slopism was not unintentional, the intention was to establish a precedence for current colonialism as bringing civilizations to barbarians, as Guru Aurobindo remarked that AIT was conceived because European couldn't afford to be seen as rapacious horde, which as colonialist they were.

This precedence was later adapted by Islamic intellectuals to claim superiority over Hinduism .

In a most twisted fashion it was accepted by some Hindus to curry favour with their masters (Mahatma Gandhi one among them).

Intellectuals like Swami Vivekananda and Guru Aurobindo opposed this false notion of Aryans , but vested interest always ensured the objection was always buried

The purpose of this was to show Indians as the inferior race and Europeans as master race.
Also by establishing superiority a natural right on India was claimed by Europe.
Churchill said as much when he remarked that British has as much claim on India as any one else with the possible exception of original natives.

Unfortunately even though English has left the country, Indians remain shackled by this perceived inferiority.

There was a second thread which ran contrary to this, after Indus valley was excavated and a presence of civilization prior to AIT was established, it was proposed that Dravidian established the Indus valley civilization, which was destroyed by invading orders of barbarian Aryans.
It was alleged that Dravidian were pushed to south by Aryans and caste system instituted to sub ordinate original natives.

This was to establish a racial divide between upper and lower caste , as well as north Indian and south Indian. It was exploited by Communists/Dravidian politicians/Certain Dalit activists to occupy a moral highground against Hindu/Brahmin.

This antagonism persists to this date and is a impediment to national integration as well as any social reform.

A more articulate view is expressed in this article and this comment by Jaffna.

Now coming back to the post in question,

First, To claim AIT must be right as India has been invaded numerous times is an example of intellectual sloth. AIT makes specific claims about the timeframe and effect on civilization. Only if it is right then can it be said AIT is right.

Second Such claims are a reflection of colonialist mindset that Indian culture has always been a phoren import from North West. Here the commentator makes a departure to claim that although AIT is correct, Indic culture is by and large soil grown variety, but as I said while introducing AIT, AIT rejects any such claims.

Third. I could not understand why the commentator referred to Aryans as bread people, if it referred to dietary habit (that is rice versus wheat) that is easily one of the most asinine defense
(I apologize for saying this) of AIT. I will like to think that dietary habits are dictated by climate and staple available rather than AIT.

Considering the political and historical significance of AIT, I think present discussion on AIT is a good thing.

Past is never an established fact.

Future of BJP

One of the many reasons that attracts me to BJP is that it is one of the few parties in India, where there is a semblance of internal democracy.

Any other party from Shiv Sena in right to Samajwadi party in left is just a prop for stoking egos and furthering narrow interests of regional satraps and their dynasties. The congress has ofcourse perfected the art of sycophancy, to the level of establishing Gandhi dynasty in the secular pantheon, their chutzpah is met only by rationalist parties of TamilNaadu.
Ironically only communist has some semblance of internal democracy among all the secular parties , however, considering their dogmatic positions on Marxism, it is impossible for any sensible Indian to join the left.

In short, BJP is the only party where it is possible for some one can hope to come up without being a member of a influential family. This however, is changing.

Last decade has seen tremendous growth of the party. With the growth however have come numerous challenges. There is growing incidents of the corruption, nepotism and bickering. At present there is a vacuum at the top by the indifferent health of Mr Vajpayee, and damnation of Mr Advaani after his Jinnah speech, to fill this vacuum there is a ongoing tussle between second rung leaders, none of whom are as popular as Mr. Vajpayee or Mr. Advani. This has left the party in a lurch which is astounding given its reasonable performance in state elections since last year and indifferent performance of UPA government at the centre with lame duck PM at the helms.

However, for this party is to be blamed. The party has failed because the way it was structured , ie cadre based works for a marginal political power. BJP drew almost all of it's cadre directly from RSS, which worked since its constituency was committed RSS/Jan Sangh member.
However as it grew it transformed from cadre - based organizations to mass - based organization.
This brought following changes.

1) Addition of constituents who were not as committed as the core.
2) Addition of constituents who though might agree with RSS ideology, have different priorities.

It is obvious that to incorporate these constituents with a less loyalty than core and also different priorities a mass - based - model as opposed to cadre-based-model.
This was also realized by various party ladders, however jockeying for power positions meant that this was never put into the practice. Venkaiah Naidu was largely ineffective in expanding the base or reconciling the ambition of the second rung leadership, on the contrary he sought to secure his position by encouraging antagonism in the party. This ofcourse resulted in the present ideological as well as directional confusion.

Now the rot has sought to be stymied by appointment of Mr. Rajnath Singh as party president.
He is a capable leader and already in his own silent manners doing the re-engineering.

But will that be enough ? I doubt that. The reason is that main strength of a political party is its ideas. And as I said before in religious context, ideas need to be constantly evaluated, new ideas evolve from old one depending on the changed circumstances, old ideas are reaffirmed, rejected and modified all the times.

How is that possible ? Two things, first there should be open and transparent discussion, debate and even dissent has this power to test the robustness of any principle. Any idea which can not withstand debate is incorrect and ought to be changed or may be even discarded. Second when it is said that we live in a information age most of the times it is repeated only for sake of rhetoric and its true import never realized, however there is an explosion of data and information, which if analysed can alter our understanding in different ways.

However for these two processes to take place their importance must be realized.
Unfortunately by repeating the tired slogan of discipline, BJP shows that it has not yet learned .

Discipline is good for Boy Scout or for military , but to use discipline to foist artificial unanimity in political discussion is foolish.

I am sure an argument can be made that in absence of discipline BJP will be disadvantage vis a vis Congress and other persona - based parties. However advantage of discipline is far outweighed by its disadvantage, so even for practical purposes it is not a good policy.

Another argument can be made that discipline can contain the power play that goes in political parties, but in my view that is a false medicine. To give a recent example when Ms. Uma Bharathi was projected as the Chief Ministerial candidate during the M.P. assembly elections, it is hypocritical to raise issue of her capability , this should have been discussed before projecting her as leader. Neither is her being disgruntled totally unjustified, after all she brings the votes, which is more than what can be said about second rung leaders.

Further any tendency to suppress will just worsen the situation.

That is the reason that BJP still sticks to Gandhian Socialism and other outdated sophistry.

For sake of India that it wishes to build, it should open up and abandon false notion of discipline.

Inebriated by Idea (Or yet another random aphorism)

It is shortcoming of educated class in modern times,

They mistake ideas for liqueur, to be taken after a day's hard work, in shots, to feel warm and fuzzy, sometimes a patiala for virulence and sometimes a cocktail for better intoxication

Team India

Let me admit this first, I am not one of the most enthusiastic cricket watcher, partly because it takes forever and partly because I belong one of those rare males who do not feel any surge of hormones, when cricket statistics are recounted.

One of the most striking change that Sourav Ganguly brought to Indian cricket team is the the new found confidence and aggression.

It can be argued that Indians were always this talented, that they always had potential.
Unfortunately road to success in competitive sports is littered with potentials.

And such has been the case with Indian cricket for most of times in the past. The reasons all too well known.

As a spectator, it was exasperating to watch boys in blue snatch defeat from jaws of victory in match after match, the meekness and timidity on full display in match after match.
There was a maddening fatalism in the way games were lost, a morbid combination of non chalance and defeatism. A lack of killer instinct , singular for someone in Cricket.

Much of this can be blamed on the politics and groupism in Indian cricket, when connection mattered more than merit, but in my view this meekness was a symptom of malaise which went much more deeper in Indian psyche itself.

After centuries of suppression, we had accepted a role of underdog for eternity to come.
The meekness and the fatalism was sign of nation who has lost its vitality and is resigned to a never ending cycle of misery and inferiority. When this happens to a nation, even the giants turn midgets and even the highest ideals are reflection of people.

Freedom struggle gave us a new stride but anglophile policies of our beloved leaders ensured that we remain laggards. Five decades of stagnation and intellectual befuddlement were enough to strip India of the vitality and cover it with a feeling of despondency.

I know this may sound too philosophical and absurd for cricket, but I am convinced that I am correct.

That is why, the role played by Saurav Ganguly can not be overstated. By defending the young players like Yuvraaj Singh , Harbhajan Singh etc. from whims and intrigues of BCCI, he ensured that merit instead of recommendations is the criterion to be in the team.

Along with this , his natural assertiveness as a leader as opposed to pliancy of earlier players encouraged the younger generation. This was the spark which resulted in upsurge of confidence and killer instinct.

The recent performance proves this. Every time one of the players have played the lead the charge to ensure victory, and even in the matches India lost, it lost fighting hard, unlike the past when it forfeited match before the actually defeat itself.

Contrast this with recent past when the only person that stood between victory and defeat, or to be more precise between life and a ignoble death was Sachin Tendulkar. His contribution is immeasurable for the reason that more often than not he was a strength of pillar for the the team. Now, he has been either out of team (owing to the injury) or out of form for the most part, it has not affected the performance or the morale of the team.

Isn't it somewhat of co-incidence that Team India turned a new leaf at the same time Indian IT industry took tentative steps towards global recognition and NDA came to power.

Ofcourse I am not suggesting that it was due to BJP that Team India found its confidence.
What I am saying is all of three have a common cause. That cause is a rise of a new mindset, impatient to forge ahead, no longer needing meekness or level playing field or moral pontification by secular brigade.

When we cut the root

Via sepia mutiny,

Outsourcing abortion to India

Reports like above make me despair.

That discrimination against women happen in these progressive times, and in educated families makes you disrespect fellow Indians.

I am sure that a economic analysis can be done, so that preference for male child can be attributed to either access to additional labour (for poor families) and for social security (for well off), however that for people as religious as Hindus, who claim to place so much sanctity on life, and who make such a pomp and show of religion, this act of murdering conceived life antrivializingng life to economic calculus is nauseating.

Even if girl child is not murdered, she has to face a life full of discrimination and oppression.
I have personally witnessed such many times subtle and some times not so subtle odious behaviourMalnutritionon , inferior education, unreasonable restrictions, dowry there are far too many injustices to enumerate here.

And this, not only in the house of poor and not in the house of illiterates alone. This is the story of many affluent families and of many in the educated class. That this monstrous obsession with a male child , for sake of old age or to continue the lineage still thrives in India, is just one more indicator of something rotten within us.

This rot has to be cleaned by us Hindus, all the legislation and laws will not be able to stop it.

Manu smriti for all its faults, was right, when it said that a place where women is not given its due honour can never flourish

Update: As FroginTheWell pointed out in the comments it is prevalent in other communities as well, that only means it is a serious matter for every Indian

Bose : The forgotten hero

Via Slimes

MPs show Netaji is a forgotten hero,

".. Leader of Opposition L K Advani found that he was the only one to have made it for the ceremonial floral tribute at the Central Hall, to commemorate Netaji’s 110th birth anniversary. Not one of the other 700-odd MPs showed up for the occasion....."

That one of the giants has been forgotten is a indictment of Indians, ensnared by the siren song of dynasty we have chosen to forget those who sacrificed their lives for us.

I would like that people be aware of the past, that past which ensured what we are today.

There is a practical difficulty in this, as it will not be possible to pay our homage to each and every of the numerous martyrs, may be a US like system where a single day is marked as tribute to all the freedom fighters some known, many of them unknown.

When Yanks lose sense of humour

That Indians have no sense of humour is a well accepted stereotype.

That Americans have loads of it is well accepted also.

Then what explains this , this and this ?

I will explain although it needs no explanation,

Scott Adams wrote a humourous (in a silly , PJ kind of way), basically saying that for a photon time having no value will not be able to observe theory of evolution hence theory of evolution can not be completely true. He further mentioned that he is writing this to yank people's chain,
and he expects lots of pissing off.

And even after his claiming this there were lot's of commentators who were, well angry or what is worse seriously arguing with him. And no they were not jesusfreaks , they were pro-evolution rationalists.

This is a recurring feature of his blog. He often writes some silly post and with unfailing regularity there is fury and fire. I would have thought that humour was obvious in the post.

I read his God's debris and it seemed similar to Hindu philosophy. (Ofcourse he is hardly an ideal endorsement for religion)

This just indicates what always seemed to me obvious.

1) Despite all rhetoric, rationalists are as dogmatic. What is worse they miss sense of humour many times (in other words behaving in same manner they accuse Christians of)

2) Western atheism is a reflection of western religion.

Social - Reforms and State

This post is prompted in part by Shivam's post which reported a incidence of atrocity against dalit.

While Indian constitution was being written, members of constitution assembly realized, correctly in my view, that that their aim of establishing ideal of equality and freedom as a guiding force behind the republic could not be fulfilled as long as the Indian society was mired in prejudice and discrimination whether on the basis of caste or of gender.

With this in view, various laws were enacted which on one hand dealt severely with any incidence of discrimination and on the other hand provided affirmative action to victims of discrimination.

And yet even after more than 50 years of laws, what has been achieved in the way of the goal is hadly impressive. Granted it was always a difficult task considering the diverse nature and deep roots of prejudice, still the continuing oppression does raise questions whether the way is a correct one or a sufficient one.

I think solely relying on state to reform society was a mistake.

My contention is not their should not be the laws against caste oppression & discrimination, but that there is something rotten within the society and some kind of reform is required
It can not be accomplished by state, for the reason that while the laws may be written by enlightened individuals , state is a reflection of society. In that case, may be it is unreasonable to expect state as the sole agency of change.

Same can be argued for failure of anti- dowry laws.

The complaint that this law is abused can not be justified with the incidents of atrocities.
As an analogy the complaint that police routinely abuse IPC can not be countered by quoting incident of crimes. However I will broadly agree with need for specific laws against caste oppression.

And yet there is one aspect of dalit activism, which disappoints me. Whether supporting reservation or laws, anyone belonging to the upper caste is presumed guilty beforehand, in other words it reinforces caste identities, in effect ensuring that caste discrimination remains.

Also the fact that it was not members of upper caste who committed the crime (ref. Shivam's post) that how the problem of caste based discrimination is more complicated than a upper caste against backward caste/scheduled caste that it is made to be. Case in point TamilNadu where even though it has been more than 40 years since Dravidian parties came to the power discrimination against Scheduled caste, often by powerful backward castes continues. In UP and Bihar also the oppressor and oppressed change from place to place. Somewhere it is Rajpoot vs Yadav in other places it is Yadav vs. Dalit. A recent phenomenon that I observed was that in Bihar many persons belonging to middle class (mostly upper caste) have dropped their surname due to fear of discrimination.

I think in addition to social prejudice , there is also economic factors, as in rural India, it is the landed gentry which dominates. I have not yet read upon land reform so I can not comment on the way to resolve this.

Memento

Saw memento last night on comp.

It was good in a pretty meta- way.

Do I wish that Indian cinema had movies like this ? Not really.

I will pick Sholay (or even Elaan) over Memento.

Some disjointed jotting

Japanese girls are cute.

While this is understandable ,what is not understandable is why do they have to wear short skirts in freezing temperature.

Today I experienced first snowfall of my life. I hate snow.

Japanese like order and complications.

This means that they have three category of trash , recyclable, burnable and non- burnable, to be disposed on separate days.

To figure out which is which is beyond my limited capacity.

This means that I have two options , either bring the trash to India, or , dispose at night when no one is watching.

About Free Markets

I am in general supporter of free market, however where I am against libertarians and other assorted species is that I do not think that Free Market is a way to Nirvana or Redemption.
In my opinion market is an interesting concept a instrument, a good instrument but still one which can be abused. Since its very premise is based on perfect information and free participation, It can not self correct against fraud, misinformation and coercion.
So it needs outside force to enusre smooth working , what about law and order ? Law and order is necessary but not sufficient. The essential guarantee for free market is presence of morality.
I find it disappointing that people are so dismissive of morality.
It may because of three reasons

1)Association of morality with religion.
2) Association of morality with collectivism and negation of individualism
3) Difficulty in establishing morality
4) Impossibility of quantitative analysis of morality.

I think 4) is much more imporant that what seems at first glance.

Law and order is limited because it acts after the incidence and is at best an disincentive while the act is being carried out.

As someone who has studied and science and engineering which is application of former, there is a tendency to ignore anything which can not be quantified, this ofcourse is a terrible limitation of reductionism in particular and so called scientific way in general. That is why I am not particulary fond of rationalists.

As a reason morality is not much discussed topic. Instead the talk centres around incentives and disincentives, this ofcourse assumes incentives and disincentives can regulate human behaviour and ensure compliance of a large population.

But this is incorrect for this reason, immorality has a way of seeping into populace, because it appeals to animal inside us. This greedy animal acts according to instinct, what is more it is not rational . Law and order can prevent this animal from injuring others, but all this time this greed lurks and infects others.

This animal can not be eliminated but leashed, and the best leash is self-discipline which can only come from morality. This sadly lacks from any discussion.

Japan and India (and Atanu)

Much has been said about how India and West are different.

However in a way Japan and India do constitute opposite poles.

Japanese have a tendency to make queues, Indians have a tendency to break it.

In other words , in Japan order arises out of chaos, in India order is subsumes into chaos.

However depite this apparent contradiction in the normal life, Japanese politicians are as corrupt as Indian politicians, how can this be explained ?

As an aberration ? does it have its root cause in the civilization itself ?

And can this change Atanu mind when he says indian voters are corrupt.

Silliness in Indian Media

The recent topic of debate on X- Factor, which is shown on NDTV the familiar circus of pseudo intellectuals and sour pusses was

Do we need government ?

I am still shaking my head.

And no this is not provocative, this is simply silly, it is somewhat similar to

Do we need personal hygiene ?

But this in a way is a progress, from Das Kapital to Atlas Shrugged our intellectuals have come a long way.

May be after 20 or 30 years they will more amenable to idea of Hinduism.

Some may even say , Hey Hinduism is not a bad idea at all.

Adieu Dharam Singh

From news reports, it seems likely that Congress will be biting the dust.

I am ofcourse happy, because the developments will result in BJP occupying power for the first time in South India, ironically (may be not) with the help of a secular party. This will ofcourse give serious heart attacks to secular deities , which I always consider a good thing.

However seriously speaking, what I would like to see is Bangalore come out from the present mess. I have never lived in Bangalore (only time I went was for three days) and whatever I hear about present problems in either through media or through friends. But I hold Bangalore dear, the reason , it represents what India is capable of. I admit that present expansion puts a serious constraint on the city causing resentment in long time residents. But I will prefer present day Banglore over the past anyday. I do not measure Banglore by the pubs (I am a tee - totaller) or disco (I hate loud music), but by the hope , confidence and aspirations of the present generation.
For this reason Banglore is to be cherished and provided all the ways to flourish.
I will try to write a post about it later.

Will BJP be able to stem the rot ? I hope so. But I have no knowledge of the Karnatak politics.

Addendum : This has an interesting implication ofcourse, to make you recollect how Sonia Gandhi did not bother to give Deve Gowda time of day when he wanted to meet her.

That means that Sonia Gandhi is arrogant like her mother-in-law, but unlike her MIL she is a dolt.

With less than 150 members, she is acting like Caesar (or rather Tzarina)

Although English media will prefer to tell how she is a changed person from that tea party of 1998, and is almost a combination of blessed virgin and sita (it is ridiculous but nobody can blame media for being sensible).

May be it is a set up before she falls hard, may be God does have a plan

Distorting Casteism : A clarification

Shivam has linked this post of mine, which was a rant cum reply to Gaurav (Sabnis), comment and post here. Let me clarify some points.

1) This is a blog with a strong POV and what is more high biases (allergy). There are better people in blogosphere like Jaffna or JK or Sandeep to discuss casteism.

2) I do not condone casteism.

3) Words have a meaning and a context. So I find it annoying when our educated class uses phrases like racism or communalism or fascism or nazism, without giving any thought , just to slander opposition. This is more infuriating to me because my side is always a target of this demonization. The unintended consequense is that society becomes desensitized to such horrors. Case in point, how in any school or college you will find so many students admiring Hitler

4 ) As i said in the above mentioned post, the reason why atheists and rationalists (almost all of them english educated ) make such a elementary mistake, as the commentator in question did, is because they are dismissive of past, which is not neccessarily wrong, however what is inexcusable is their ignorance. In my view, in order to dismiss something one has to have a knowledge . That it is not done is arrogance and a well known shortcoming of educated elites at any times.

5) Another mistake is projection, Freedom was not always the highest ideal in realm of society and civilization, there was safety and progress, which was possible only with high levels of organization. Another is since the recent oppression were of racial natures (colonization), it must mean that earlier oppressions (like casteism) can also be understood in racial terms. This as I wrote before is because of ignorance of our past. In fact, it is worse because the elites steeped in western ethos are dismissive of the past and can only grasp the history from western (to be more accurate rationalist) perspective.

6) I repeatedly asserted that I was employing M Type arguments. The reason for this is I am not familiar with the commentator. However I am aware of the pervading environment in educated India and therefore can make a reasonable guess.
This means that while the commentator might not have meant it but the inherent bias of secular crowd, which in India is against Hinduism, did work in the perception.
This however is Projection from my side

7) When I say elite, it is not necessarily from monetary resources, but from intellectual resources

8) I tried to post this as a comment, but could not. Reason, I am working on a Japanese keyboard .

WMBC and their Apologists

WMBC stands for "Well Meaning But Clueless" and can be applied to most of the Indian Leaders.

This is my contribution to modern phrase- coining era.

However coming to the original WMBC , our "Chacha Nehru", despite that he and his family ensured that Indians remain mired in poverty and India being regarded as a little more than third world country, still finds a legion of supporters. Many of them are from previous generation and have a tendency to view past from rose tinted glasses, others belong to this generation who have either not read history at all and hence are easily swayed by secular media or who have read and believed official history.

But the way older generation sometimes fawn on Chacha can not be compared at all by present generation.

Sometime back Sandeep had dissed a certain specimen of the above kind

Going through it again, it reminded of this article by Fali S. Nariman.
which was all the more disappointing because he is one of the better legal minds in the country, and hence a logical approach should be expected from him, however what was obvious was fawning and looking at past through rose tinted glasses.

The apology for Chacha this time was infrequent but not rare by any measure cliche, that he might have been a failure but atleast he stopped India from becoming a Hindu - Rashtra

Now let me assert this India was , is and remain in essence a Hindu Rashtra, rest is just technical description.

For those who get shocked and are prone to heart attacks, let me point it out that what is Hinduism for me , is Indian for others , a matter of technical details as I noted above.

However, when it is said that Chacha Nehru stopped India from becoming a Hindu Rashtra , the implication is that due to the groundwork done by him , it is possible that despite Hindu being a majority of 85%, BJP and it's ideological allies are finding it difficult to get an absolute majority.

Here let me play kill joy. First that BJP was able to come in power (albeit with a coalition) largely on the strength of Ayodhya movement should sober cheerleaders of Chacha, and that it was not able to build on it can be blamed on the fascination of Atal - Advani on imitating Nehru - Patel (which in first case was undesirable, in second case was unachievable)

Second the above implications that if some other leader, instead of chacha, for example Rajaji or Sardar Patel had been the Prime Minister, India would have turned into a theocratic state ala Pakistan, this not only is a show of poor faith in other founding fathers, but also one more symptom of malaise called servility which infect Indian vitality.

Last by showing such groveling to dynasty these people only demonstrate their lack of imagination and poverty of ideas, which considering their status as intellectual, makes one feel pity for India.

Doomed to fail

Via Secular - Right,

"... Jinnah would conclude that Pakistan had failed him ..."

I doubt that Implementation of Pakistan failed the idea of Pakistan Jinnah had.

Any nation based on Islamic identity is bound to turn how Pakistan turned.

In fact, in a perverse way it can be said that Qaid - E - Azaam got what he asked for.

The fact that it is not worse is owing to large dole of Uncle Sam and what of India is left in Pakistan (and no, I am not talking about Roti- Naan or Punjabi Language)

Our Airports and Their Airports

Question is when will Mumbai Airport be like Changi Airport ?

Short Answer : In good time.

Short Answer (but little longer) : When the airports are privatized.

So Why are the airports not privatized ?

Left ?

Not the complete truth, while Left is most vociferous in their opposition to any privatization owing to their intellectual hypocrisy, the other part that is not recognized is the fact there is a big disincentives for politician of any hue to do this. Reason the public sector is more or less, fiefdom of politicians. Loss of lucrative public sector will mean a loss of status , loss of influence and a big loss of money. So this task (of privatization ) is not going to be pleasant.

I can only wish that someone grasps the nettle.

About Bofors

I have not much say to say about Bofors as there is hardly any juice left in the story and I always prefer juice over content.

However, Swapan Das Gupta has written a good article,

Conclusion PM is clueless, but our middle class will continue to be infatuated with him,

as he is "well - meaning".

Considering Indian experience, I think it is safe to say that "well meaningness" and "clueless ness makes " for a lethat combination.

Case in point Chacha and Rajeev Gandhi

About Tight Jeans & High Heels

Transit gives a lots of time to think,

One of which is,

why is that so many women prefer Skin tight jeans and Sharp high heels, which I assume is highly uncomfortable

three answers are possible

1) All of them belong to a Opus - Dei like Christian sect which believes in ritual of self - mortification as a penance against original sin.

2) They are doing this to please men.

3) They are doing this to titillate and tease men.

In first case, it is a matter of religion and I have not much to comment about.

In second case I am grateful that they are going to such pains to please me. Now only they would go a little further

In third case, it should be a latest dictate of feminism and hence is above reproach

In transit

This post is being written from Changi Airport while in transit, and as such I am not able to come up with anything.

So let me say this

"Opinions are like Blogs , everyone has one"

Now excuse me while I go for hunting........

Dumb and Dumber

This was dumb,

RSS recipe for strong nation: A Hindu should produce at least 3 kids, even 17, to save demography

And this is dumber

Ban family planning: Puri seer

".....He alleged that family planning measures were proving to be the bane of Hindus who would 'become a minority in India quite soon if these practices continue'...."

As I have written here, this is a unhealthy precedent.

It brings me sadness to find that Seer, who is a intellectual descendant of Adi - Shankaracharya

is saying this .

This kind of thought process is against revival of Hinduism.

Primary Red has related thought

A hiatus

Today I start trip to Far east, the trip is of three months duration.

Along with the work, I am also looking for a shift, so blogging will be sporadic

Gangs Of New York : A perspective

Let me admit, I am not a connoisseur of cinema (or for most art forms) as such.
While as far as literature is concerned I can claim that my tastes are tolerable (VS Naipaul and such), my taste in visual medium can shock and awe anyone who claims to have good taste.
I always prefer entertainment over serious intellectual diet. In my defense I can only say that it is inhuman to make a person with as short attention order as me among chattering couples and ringing mobiles , to expect that I will somehow control call of nature to indulge in serious action of intellectual kind, but such are the injustices. My understanding of English cinema is even less owing to the different cultural grounding.

However one of the English pictures that I liked was Gangs Of New York . Part of it was due to do with excessive violence and sex in the movie (which sensible man will not like the combination), but what interested me more was it offered me a peak into the past, that too of world's only superpower. And interesting time was that , at that time US was witnessing large immigration from Europe (Ireland ) owing to wars and famines, moreover the North and South were at loggerheads over abolition of slavery which was to result in Civil war. So it can be no doubt that the period was among one of the most dynamic in US History after War of independence. In this respect it was instructive to watch the film.

The resemblance of the conditions as depicted in film and our present was uncanny.

Corrupt politicians, Police doing the bidding of the most influential, social tension and blood bath, ignorant intelligentsia ,Strongmen bending and breaking the law, nexus of politicians and strongmen, love-hate relation between strongmen and public and between all this gold rush and mad scrambling to exploit virgin territory all these characteristics are similar to what is seen in India today.

We have corrupt politicians, police stands for strongest. We have social tension and frequent riots. Bal Thackarey and Laloo Yadav is adored by their respective constituencies despite being a harmful influence. I am sure many other similarities may be drawn.

So here is(are) the moral(s)

1) America was not built in a day. It took sweat and blood to make it what it is. There was no God who ordained that America should be what it is , nor any manifest destiny at play.
So it is illogical to just compare what America is today with India. America worked for it. Through evolution it has well established institution which deliver and even among so much bickering there is a single idea, a positive force (not necessarily the best )which unites them
That is freedom. So just do not bitch around , do not let heads hang down , do not sag the shoulders and do not sigh. It is not the right time for it.

2) That America changed doesn't neccessaily mean that India will change too for the better.
Many south American countries which got independent long time back are still struggling.
The reason is the idea behind US was much superior.

3) Even if India will change , it will not be to out credit if it takes 100 years to be what America is. America was in a way pioneer in the recent history, it faced problems and solved them. It will be wise for us to recognize the nature of those problems and implement the solution , if possible.
Moral is be observant , read history and learn from it. contrary to what Ford said History is not bunk

Distorting Casteism

As I have indicated before I am not an admirer of Casteism. I do not know for sure how it originated but even if it had some purpose at the beginning it was soon perverted and after it has been one long sad tale. What is more in present time idea of caste has lost it's relevance and I am in favour of gradually abolishing it.

However comments like this irk me no end,

"The caste system is a form of racism, in fact probably one of the worst forms. Worst because it was institutionalized.
Racism/xenophobia is in my opinion a natural reaction of human beings. Distrust or dislike of people from a tribe other than yours is a feeling that will naturally arise. The natural expression of this is a tendency to be with your own type, and be indifferent or distrustful about the other......."

Where is racism? where does race come into the picture ? Oh I see! the accursed AIT, where blonde and blue eyed Aryans came and subjugated dark and flat nosed Dravidians ! I can only wonder at how some people be so ignorant about History and what is more do not even try to revise the knowledge.

AIT is already outdated and even High Priests of secularism are advocating for AMT, soon as Nizhal said there will be ATT (Aryan Tourist Theory), but still non chalance of our modern and educated is somewhat annoying.

In all probability casteism might have been a result of social hierarchy occuring due to division of labour. If the purpose was to keep the races pure why not simply divide in two , instead of going to all this length about four stations ?

Ofcourse no answer will be provided for all this and AIT continued to accepted as axiomatic.

And why is that ? (Now Employing Type M argument), because of this obsession with rationalizing and what is more in freudian manner reminiscent of 19th century, seek to explain everything in terms of racial domination.

(Here I will not comment on the inability of commentator to distinguish between tribe and race),
Nor it is required to point out that caste system is somewhat counter to tribal societies hierarchies in tribal societies are different from what is Indian caste system.

Then this

".....Until a few centuries ago, only kings ruled most of the world, and were usually considered incarnations or agents of God, religion was an extension of state. Thus religion was the de-facto constitution..... "

This is ofcourse so 19th century in a eerily Marxist way, if the commentator would have cared to read a bit about Hinduism he might have found out that Hinduism evolved independently of State and it is naive and stupid to call Hinduism extension of State. But in atheist scheme of things , religion is a sin and any thoughtless insinuation is justified in order to prove its evil.

"Whoever devised the caste system was/were genius in an evil way because he identified the basis of a man's survival and progress, and used the de-facto state to clamp several restrictions on that very basis - economic activity. So only a few races/castes were allowed to indulge in the more cerebral, sophisticated, glamorous, and well-paying economic activities, while others were forced to make their living from a few menial jobs."

This is the telling example, it would be logical to think that if racial domination was the intention emphasis will be paid on possession of land than to so called cerebral activity.
The assertion also ignores the fact that in absence of printing press, being a scholar was a thankless job. Again employing Type M arguement, I will say this is the projection of commentator, because he lives in a society where it cerebral jobs are well paid, he assumes it must have been in other times too.

"Is there an example of racism working, or rather working to such alarming limits, without the state actively pushing racism? Working enough to actually make one race underprivileged over the centuries?"

This again betrays the ignorance of ancient India. State in those times were not the omnipotent, omnipresent monster it is today. Communities were by and large autabsence.
In absense of mechanized production, it made sense for clan to work together in a particular trade, since there was no easy way of passing knowledge, skill had lots of importance and therefore it was zealously guarded , this could have been the beginning of caste system, I don't know for sure. But this again betrays the ignorance and I know where this comes from, being a libertarian and stating that state is a evil , it is axiomatic to assume that all the past evils (including the biggest horror religion) that happened were due to evil designs of state. And therefore caste must have been a state forced idea.

The idea then is to paint the Hinduism as an instrument for racism and prove inherent viciousness of religion

Update : Gaurav Sabnis has posted here , needless to say I am disappointed and annoyed

Rise of the Lakhanists

Recent days have seen a bloody Mafia war between Libertarians and People-with-no-label,since economics for most part is wiccan to me, I am blissfully neutral to this.

However one change that can be done is to give People-with-no-label a label, after careful consideration and ten cups of office tea, I have come to the conclusion that henceforth people-with-no-label (includeing me) should be called Lakhanists. Regarding its goal, it should have been reading up on economics, but since this is too time consuming, so in true fashion of ideal ignoramus the final goal should be to drive cartel crazy by committing as many logical fallacies as possible.

I can't see any problem with above.

Mahabharatha remixed (And Revisiting Morality : In Fraction)

This is a continuation of this and this, sort of .

Crystal blur has hilarious take on epic of MahaBharatha, it could be more funny but for the fact that for anyone familiar with western comedy it is a ground well trodden.
The only problem with this is that this style gets boring pretty soon.

I understand there was some controversy in blogosphere, one which I could not chance upon.
As a self proclaimed prude, let me say that I can stand this. MahaBharatha is too great an epic to be affected by any slander (I do not think there is any slander here, even if there was it would not have mattered)

Great Bong has a post on this, interesting one where he discusses humour in India,
I will in part disagree with him.

He says

"This is where we should use our judgment and our intellect and recognize the difference between humor and actual attempts to hurt us---else if we club everything together, we lose focus and end up looking like hypersensitive fools. You want a real example of where Hinduism was attacked. The movie "Fire"---a vulgar, detestable movie despite the fact that it was about my favorite subject in the world---lesbians.What was the need to name the protagonists as Radha and Sita? There was no humor there. Why was the Sanyasi shown to be suffering from enlarged testicles? No other motive than to show disrespect---again no humor, no contribution to the plot. And the more-than-subtle innuendo that it is Hinduism that oppresses women with the last scene hinting at the two women adopting a different religion---was that necessary in the context of what the movie supposedly was about?"

Problem is what is humour for one is slander for another and as such quite impossible, also freedom will mean freedom to slander also (public institutions and symbols, not private individuals). So while I was not exactly overwhelmed with "Fire" (I just read the review of the movie), I just shrugged my shoulders and moved on.
I think Hinduism should be able to take everything in its stride. But there is something which doesn't help and I will come to it later.

(Here I will admit that I was uncomfortable reading this post by JK, despite it being part of Ramayana. I am not unaware of the language used in the epics , but problem was that Devi Sita is considered Mother (literally), where I come from and I still associate Her with images of Mother.)

That also brings me to important point,

Is intolerance increasing ? I will say yes ! Are BJP/VHP responsible for this ? Contrary to popular view, I will say no (case in point recent controversy over Khushboo). And while this has strong political motives, it is not a particularly well planned exercise contrary to paranoia of elites.

I can try to explain this way, this is collision of two mindsets , India and Bharath,i.e. between different classes, but then why didn't this happen earlier ? After all, there was Protima Bedi doing a skinny dipping on beaches and Zeenat Amaan showing her booty in Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram

I think answer should be socialism, since independence Bharath was well within illusion of socialist utopia, which meant that India (comprising of English school educated elites) and Bharath (the others) never confronted each other.

What happened was well heeled socialites sneered over Behenjis and Bhaiyyajis ,but in cocktail circuits or in pseudo intellectual conferences. The others oblivious to this went on with life.

However in 90's things changed, post Ram Janmabhoomi movement there was a general awakening, crucial roles were played by TeleSerial MahaBharatha and Ramayana, the pivotal role was of introduction of Cable.

While earlier it was possible for middle class to remain isolated from whatever the "vices" of well heeled, after introduction of Cable it was no longer possible and here I think it is proper to say that Morality is in effect a middle class construct, but unlike others I do not see anything derogatory in it. Why? The reason is that Middle class living in Urban India lacks any land or business revenue , the only thing it can rely on is education, to possess the necessary qualification and skills, what is more failure to do so result in severe downgrading of social and economic status.
(In this respect , India is quite different from US where even for those in low stations of life , there is a comfortable level), this necessarily induces more conservatism. As a general strategy conservatism ensures better chances of success. This will also explain the paradox why becoming beauty pageants is a big aspiration in small towns.)

Coming back to the topic this intrusion of technology results in a reaction. What exacerbates this is Asymmetry of power, which means that it is English educated population which has a monopoly on medium of communication, this means that all the media has inherent bias , which is not only against middle class, but also positively derogatory against it.

Am I paranoid here ? I wouldn't like to think so . Growing up as a student in Sarkaari School (Although one of the better ones), I was subjected to jeering occasionally by those from Some or other St's school, what was more alarming however was such behaviour was not only encouraged by the parents of the wards but also approved with a sense of superiority. To me this indicates somewhat of servile attitude.

What this results is, dissonance between the two classes and the result is there to see.
Is there any solution, I think it is possible if instead of mocking middle class as has been the fashion among intellectual classes , a little tolerance and sympathy towards middle classes is shown.

However , I have not yet come up with whether there is rule of thumb for establishing morality.

What Hinduism lacks

Most of this is what I gleaned from Guru Aurobindo

Here is what is my tentative theory,

We do not have true bhakti,

This may seem counter intuitive at first, after all isn't India is a nation of non stop jagrans and numerous festivals. But what we see is not bhakti , it is ritual, shell of something which existed but has withered, the form , intangible of some vibrant past.
What is bhakti, it is a longing for the light, unexplained quench for the fountain of eternity.

Do we have that ? No ! What we have is worshipping for warmth of crowd, for healing from bruises, for escape from suffering of life. But is this the true way.

Bhakti should be not the escape but the embrace of life. Joy even at bruising, rapture even in solitude, affirmation of the supreme spirit, celebration of Brahman.

True Bhakti should manifest in Gyan, Knowledge undivided by here and this, self and not self,
this and that. Knowledge transcending what is science and what is faith, what is sentient and what is not, of this world and all other worlds possible.

True Bhakti should manifest in Shakti. Not the violence, but the strength which knows that world is not a place of suffering but a place of joy, Humanity as unblemished, innocent . Conception is the very manifestation of God not a Sin. That we humans have nothing to be ashamed of. That the greatest crime that can be committed is abnegation of self. That real world is manifestation of God and not Maya. The purpose of life is to elevate itself and not deny.
Beyond Moral and Immoral. Towards God.

True Bhakti should aware one of Dharma. That it is according to Dharma to defend oneself , even commit violence.

When India has realized this , she will occupy her former position among the Gods themselves.

M - Type Arguements

Atanu had written this post on M - Type Arguements ,

In brief , M- Type Arguements are those which are based on the motives or supposed motives of policy makers.
C- Type Arguement are those which are based on the consequences of policies.

In general, C - Type arguements are preferred over M- Type arguements which are considered bad form for arguements.

However as Atanu put it, M- Type arguements are inevitable while dealing in real world.

The reason is imperfect information.

C- Type arguements are for the case when all the infornation relating to an issue is known and whaever is available is consistent.

This is reasoning by deduction.

However in most of the case when all the information is not know before hand and some information is inconsistent with other, it calls for assuming, in filling the gap as well as rejecting what is inconsistent, and most of the times the assumptions is critical. This may be called inductive reasoning or plain old speculation.

For example ,if suppose Musharraf were to announce some new measure, by C - Type reasoning the verdict will be either undecided or pro - Musharraf,
However if one were to speculate (reasonable given past experiences), Musharraf's motives could be questioned and in the light of what happened in past, a catious approach be taken.

That said M- Type is fraught with sloppiness and to be used with utmost caution, that said even the great detectitve was using M Type reasoning when he sad, "Why the dog didn't bark ? "

Education of Mind

I have been reading up works of Guru Aurobindo and Nietzsche lately and I find the reading exhilarating.

Guru Aurobindo has been a true intellectual giant and it is our misfortune, that so few Indians read his works. Because if we did, we would have less grief than it is today.
I have been always perplexed by the essence of what is India, and while I am hardly there, Guru Aurobindo's writings have shown a ray of hope, a future promise for this journey and it is very encouraging for someone like me. I think Guru Aurobindo was able to grasp what makes India a living nation.

Nietzsche is another giant. Although I do not agree with him (his being an atheist and myself believer) his philosophy is truly enchanting, what is more his reasoning against previous forms compels every one to think.

He was erroneous in putting too much emphasis on racial identity, but then considering how 19th century Europe was fascinated with idea of genes as antithesis to existence of God, it can be understood. He gets most blamed for development of Nazism, but IMO , his racial outlook although very important was not core to his philosophy (Though I am sure that discarding will invalidate his assertions, whether it will reject his outlook, I don't know), however ground for Nazism were prepared many thinkers as well as leading lights (Ford being one among them).

However his assertion that in quest of God or abjures, thinkers of all schools have made life a sin, and abnegation of life a virtue, is quite correct.

Somehow I feel him more appealing than Ayn Rand. But this may be because Nietzsche was metaphysical (as Rand put it).

All in all, past two months have been pretty good.

A grand declaration for rights of (Bored) housewives

I, hereby, demand that Government of India, with immediate effect, make it mandatory for Ekta Kapoor to share her soap opera's with DoorDarshan. By doing this, GOI will be recognizing the important place saas - bahu intrigues play in life of Bored Housewives.

By tuning in to devious plans of grotesquely made up vamps and tedious pathos of ever suffering protagonists, our millions of house wives are able to fight the ennui that inevitably comes after dispatching husbands and kids, what is more it gives them up to date info on how to run circles around mother -in- law and plot downfall of pesky sister-in-law.

Without the benefit of this guidance , they will be forced to rely on out - of -date technologies to spread malice.

In fact, watching Kyunki Saas... or Kahaani Ghar..... Has become more necessary than eating or even breathing and therefore is a fundamental right essential for survival of life.

In order to secure for Bored Housewives , right of viewing inane programs, I , hereby declare formation of BBB (Band Of Bored Baahus), This radical organization , immediately after its formation will formulate and carry out plans to achieve aforementioned goal. Ignore this at your own peril.

Does above sounds ridiculous ?

Well if Supreme Court can force Ten Sports to share Cricket coverage with DD , ostensibly because it is the fundamental right of people, why not above ? Why Not ?

The Others

I am not one of the greatest admirer of NDTV 24X7, despite "showing the truth". Considering their past performances, a more honest tagline will be "We think that public is idiot, so we will shove our biases , all the while pretending that we are doing a favour", but that is besides the point. At any rate I have become used to taking reportage of NDTV with pinches buckets of salt and I have limited my watching of NDTV to mainly the segments where possibility of spin is minimal (weather report and Page 3 Gala for example, but with their talents they could put a spin, somehow).

Anyway yesterday I had the occasion to see that all too familiar pomposity segment , We The People, presented by Humbug Barkha Dutt, the topic being
"Do Politicians have a right to Privacy" (in my view the answer is yes and some one who can't see it is either naive or knave), what took the cake however was her opening statement referring to taping of Amar Singh's phone.

Frankly speaking, I feel stupified that anyone with a single neuron present can fail to see the evil such things represent. Taping the phone, to record conversations only in order to blackmail later is a abhorrent idea, and it does not matter whether you are a public figure or not.

Imagine what does this leads to , "elimination of privacy", but that is not the worst of it.
The worst part will be a society which lives in fear of other, for who knows what new oppression is being planned by the powers that be against people it considers to be it's opponent, surely the result will be a diseased populace, a hell of intrigue and treachery, where even shadow is not trusted.

In other words Type 1984 World.

Yet people are indifferent to this outrage or what is worse perversely elated. The reason Amar Singh is a politician , he is a humbug and given to power politics. What is generally not realized that powers which are subverting the basic tenets of constitution for their gains may well do this to the others, who are not politicians and who are honest, the only crime being their opposition.

I can understand the mechanism, it is the notion of other. The logic is that other (politician, Hindus, Muslims, ShankraCharya,Baba Ramdev, KarSevak), had it coming, the other is a burden on nation and it is a good riddance. When it is our turn , as it invariably is, we are shocked and spluttering "How can this happen to us", or self - righteously proclaiming that "India is a wretched place".

And I am not taking about a hypothetical scenario, remember Emergency ? Even at that time quite a few educated cheered the Gandhis. The reason , "Trains are running on time, and those pesky trade unions, and not to talk of bloody nikkers" . That was ofcourse the epitome, if it can be said of what Gandhi Dynasty has been doing all along the years.
Using CBI, RAW to spy on it's opponents , fix opponent and serve patisan interest has been internalized by our political system. It is one of the most urgent malice crying for attention.

And yet we remain cocky because we are not "others" .

Meanwhile Swanpan Dasgupta & TVR Shenoy weigh in, I agree with them whole heartedly.

Free and commodity.

In a recent post Atanu made a distinction between pure and actionable information.

This makes me think what information do sex surveys convey, actionable ? Perhaps, to ladies of street, pure ? Perhaps, to people who can not afford mags of repute (such as playboy) or who like their political news with a doze of useless information.
I am ofcourse jesting.
But what I was thinking was this,
All the sex surveys I read (of India Today), there was a poll of (males, I would think) asking what part of female anatomy attracts them most, there was no corresponding poll for male anatomy. It was accompanied by a picture with a helpful pointer to all the parts voters felt attracted tp.
So the question is this , doesn't it degrade women too, if so , Why is that it goes unnoticed ?
May be , because after all PC brigade is more interested in hedonism and less is women freedom.
Shouldn't this be counted as gender discrimination ?

As Strong as Manmohan Singh

So how does our respected PM shows strength,

Manmohan offered to quit in November, (Via rediff)

"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had offered to resign last November when West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya refused to provide his government's support to the India-United States joint military exercise in West Bengal. "

If this is how strength is shown, I shudder about his weakness.

In one word by threatening to resign Mr Manmohan Singh is indulging in blackmail, in the same manner his predecessor Mr Vajpayee did.
