Trade union militancy

Mr Shekhar Gupta in recent editorial cheered the ongoing AAI strike.
The reason, more the trade unions and communist thugs play truant, more discomfort for public will be created.
This will result in a general antipathy for communist and ground swell for reform.
He is wrong for two reason.
First which is slightly minor : Hardly anyone uses Air Travel, this means notwithstanding discomfort there will be no effective opposition to Left.I can add the minor point here that in all probability those traveling by air do not exercise their franchise.
Second and the major one is that unions and communist can up the stakes and disrupt essential services, causing even severe inconvenience and nothing will happen. The reason, there is no homogeneous entity called public, what we have is a multitude of interest groups and what is more important these interest groups are convinced that their objectives can be fulfilled by fleecing the other (for this concept of other read Why socialism is successful).
At any rate when any group operate under such assumptions it means, one that there is no sense of responsibility towards country, two there is no sense of responsibility even towards self.
The result is a lack of sense of ownership, indifference and stagnation. This is a curse of welfare state. This will explain why Kerala has high unemployment even after being one of the better literate state. This will also explain why there is lack of enterpreneurship.
On related note Gaurav Sabnis has written about strike, and how trade union leadership forces the unwilling members to strike and cause serious disruption. This is no surprise, anyone familiar with the recent history of Bombay can tell how Datta Samant by his high handed manner destroyed the textile industry. How the industrial belt from Kanpur to Kolkata was ruined by political and union interference.
Nitin has written about it here . He advocates reform of labour laws. This is ofcourse impossible under the present dispension. However even in the hypothetical case if labour laws are reformed the problems will persist. The reason is, once a group transforms into mob it requires a strong discouragement and even coercion to get rid of it.
This translates into a determined polity, but a fragmented electorate inevitably mean fragmented and corrupt polity.
