Nation of "free loaders"
rediff, has interesting article on people preference for welfare oriented policies, which put emphasis on redistribution. The article uses statistics from a recently published paper
(Good bye Lenin (or not?): The Effect of Communism on People's Preferences, NBER Working Paper No. 11700, October 2005) which collected data from European counteries on people support for socialist policies.
Now the data/methodology/analysis could always be reinterpreted or disputed, however the conclusion can be verified from observations in Indian context.
Continuing power and oil subsidies even to middle classes is what jump straight at the observer.
In general we indians have become so used to state interference and subsidies, that the very
idea of individual intiative and enterprise is foreign to us . The result is ofcourse stagnation
whether political,economical,civic,social or ideological.
We are riddled with worst kind of charlatans who come to power just promising Utopia.
Our economy by and large is pathetic notwithstanding IT boom. We have growth unfriendly labour laws, land laws.
Our cities are filthy and basic civic amenities are considered luxury.
We moan and crib instead of trying to resolve our problems.
We agitate instead of paying correct price for commodities.
All the discrimination remain, and thrive.
Socialism is worse than physical violenence, in the sense that it makes parasite out of humans.
We have become what Ayn Rand called moochers
