It is these kind of statement which make my blood boil.
It is just a sign of superficiality and decadence which is a result of mindlessly aping the west.
Prostitution is not a profession,
Because sex is not a commodity, and act of copulation not a service.
The intimacy of intercourse is bond which holds the human relationship and society.
A society which put very foundation of its, as something to be sold in a market, had internalized cynicism. This is a sign of decadence and inevitable decline.
Not to say this is an insult to working women whether a teacher or a modest maid.

My problem with prostitution is : people going to prostitutes => more family-break ups => more children growing up without the affection of two parents.
I think the traditional Indian ( and many other cultures' ) emphasis on conquering lust cannot be underemphasized.
Forgot to add this - however, I am not sure if government banning prostitution is going to be of any help. Just like it isn't obvious if governmental control over drugs will actually reduce drug consumption/addiction significantly; it might only lead to more illegal activities and violence.

Government banning prostitution is not going to be 100% effective,
but that combined with social censure should work.
