French courage in face of Hezbollah:

After forcing Israel for ceasefire by criticizing its offensive against Hezbollah, France is not ready to contribute forces unless their safety is guaranteed. (via lgf)

Meanwhile UN is begging for troops.(again lgf), again after criticizing and pressurizing Israel to cease its offensive.

To make things more interesting the UN forces may consist of Malaysia and Indonesia two nations who do not recognize Israel. (once again lgf)

So much irony, so many levels.

In ancient Indian wisdom, we have developed the tactics of sáma, dhaana, bedha, dandopáyás. The critical thing is the order in which they were mentioned.

These tactics have to be used in the correct order to resolve any kind of conflict.

The israelis have reversed the order and used the dandópáyá first. Now they expect the UN and France to get in and apply the remaining strategies.

How stupid can they get ?? What is in there for France / any-country to go to Lebanon and risk the lives of its soldiers ? (except some humanitarian cause)

If Israel complains about this now, that is the ultimate irony.

Vakib,

You have got this other way round

It was NOT Israel which was suing for peace, instead it was a dhimmified Europe which was.
Therefore it stands for reason that those pushed for peace should ensure it, No !

And I do not understand how do you pratcise Sam Dam & Bhed with an enemy which is some hundred times bigger than you and aims to destruct you.

Seen in that light the existence of Israel as the only liberal and progressing nation of middle east is a testimony to its success.

hmm. I have disagreement with you on this.

I believe Israel could have done sam, dhan and bedh before attacking lebanon.

For one, Israel's enemy is not bigger than Israel. It's the other way round.

How to do Sam:
1) Give economical incentives to Lebanon - set up industries inside lebanon with Israeli backing
2) Give educational incentives to Lebanon - set up Universities with ties to the great univs of Israel

How to do Dhan:
1) Negotiate with Lebanon about the control of Hizbollah as against giving back the Sheeba farms

How to do Bedh:
1) Antagonize Hizbollah within Lebanese people by winning friends within Lebanon
2) Antagonize Hizbollah from the middle-eastern landscape by winning other friends

How to do Dand:
we have witnessed that - Military attack.

The crucial issue is Lebanon is a pluralist, multi-ethnic society which is potentially Israel's best ally in the area. It is very different from the other maniacal neighbours.

Now if you look at Israel's diplomatic strategy, you will see that it is quite stupid. (It is trying to do things the reverse way)

The UN/France have no conflict in this area, and they don't need to apply any of these 4 strategies. It is upto Israel to think of them becoz it is the one which is facing conflict.

Vakib,

You really nothing has been tried so far.

Europe and US used to pour billion of dollars of aid for Arafat.
Result? Now Palestine has elected Hamas !

US grant Egypt billion of dollars in aid and the result ? Egypt is getting more and more radicalized.

Problem with Hezbollah and Lebanon is that despite being Multi -Ethnic it is Muslims (to be more precise Shia) call the shots.

Hezbollahs avowed aim is to destruct and make Lebanon a Islamic state by cleansing its minorities.

Despite all this Hezbollaha has public support within Israel.
Never underestimate hatred arising out of irrational zealotary.

Frankly speaking to me the only solution for Israel is too keep wrecking havoc so that the cost to harm it remains high.

And it is not just Palestine or Lebanon, Israel has to contend with hatred of all the arab world and most of the muslims outside also.

The level of state sanctioned anti semitism in muslims world is astounding.

So it is billion vs. few million

this is a total nutty argument. US or the world has never poured billions of dollars in aid for either palastene or egypt :)

But anyway, my argument is for the sake of lebanon. I believe it is different from the rest of Arabia.

Israel has to accept this. Otherwise, it is just pushing its country further into conflict.

The art of diplomacy is just an art of avoiding conflict. The four strategies of sáma, dhána, bhédh, dand were tools to be used in the proper time.

The best diplomats the world has ever seen were the Britishers. Remember how they conquered India ? It is first through gifts, then through trade, and then through splitting Indian kingdoms and finally by fighting wars when necessary.

USA is extremely stupid in its diplomacy and continues to do blunders. It is applying sáma on Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Probably they are not the best states to merit that ? :) How about Lebanon, in comparison ? Even palastene ? (these people are the most civilized, secular and educated in the Muslim world)

Israelis make extremely stupid diplomats as well (even though they could be great scientists)

I think I have posted enough on commnets here that it merits a separate post on my blog :) Will do that sometime.

Well Israel got even more aid from the US.
Also Shias do not call the shots in Lebanon .The christian and sunnis are economically dominant and thier influence is perhaps far greater than thier share of population.Hezbollah has only 14 seats in the Parliament. Also it does not call for the 'cleansing' of Lebanon.
The only decent solution is Israel vacating the Palestinian land followed an international peace keeping force on the relevant borders,Israel paying monetary compensation to Palestinian refugees to those who fled in 1948.
This means the Zionist state does not control the Palestinian air space, access to sea and borders with Egypt and Jordan

vakib,

Nutty arguement !

Ok for American aid to paliestine [Link]

For American aid to Egypt
[Link]

Next time do some google search before insulting me on my blog.

Anony

1. Hezbollah is a terrorist organisation, it doesn't depend on the parliament

2. Lebanese government has no control over Hezbollah.

3. Hezbollah thrive because of civiliab support.

4. If Palestinians want land they should stop terrorist activities. Unless Arabs stop fantasizing about destruction of Israel, they should be ready to be martyred by Israel.

5. Israel has offered negotiations, it is Palestinians fault to refuse it. I feel no sympathy for them.

6. Israelis do not dance on the roads when Americans are killed. Arabs do. In my dictionary it is called being a ingrateful low life scum

7. Hezbollah wants to convert Lebanon into a Islamic state [Link] and calls for "destruction of Zionist state".
Hardly signs of someone who wants peace.

Dear Gaurav
I stumbled upon your blog through your comment on Atanu Dey's blog. So I expected that you have a sound knowledge/interest in development economics.

American aid to Egypt / Palastine is pure hogwash. USA has absolutely no commitment to the real development of these countries. If you want to know what exactly USA has to do, please read the book "end of poverty: how to make it happen in our own life time" by Dr. Jeffrey Sachs.

That will serve as a good primer for you. You will realize what exactly the USA is doing.

On the other hand, USA has strong economical interests with the Israeli state. Here, it plays the role of a true ally.

Sorry for late reply guys.

Vakibs,

No I am not an economist. However I fail to see why America should have any commitment towards development of any country especially those who find joy when innocent americans are killed.

Anon,

Israel has offered peace, it is palestinians who refuse to see the reason. Why should Isreal offer peace to anyone who wish to annihilate Israel and Jews.
Frankly speaking I am astonished at your attempt to legitimize Hezbollah
