Degrees of dhimmitude
Dhimmitude essentially is a relationship between two groups. One is the victor, the superior, the other vanquished, the subservient. The power dynamics is thus defined, the victor has the mandate to rule over the vanquished, but it is not merely about power, under dhimmutude the ruler is automatically vested with moral superiority. In effect it is not merely force but some supposedly exalted principle which manifests in the present situation, that is which explains the dominance of one and servility of others.
India has been attacked countless times since the the dawn of civilizations, from Parthian to Scythian, however after a period of unrest, the invaders assimilated themselves, transforming the original milieu.
This changed with invasions of Muslims, for while acquiring wealth and expansion of empire remained important reasons, they were necessarily the manifest ones. For the ostensible reason now was to propagate the faith, which was revealed to the Prophet by the Archangel, the mandate was a divine one and hence pay off promised was also greater than a purely territorial one. The booty was not just silver and gold, but also an eternity in paradise. Hence, for an invader,a more potent force than the force of mere weapons justified the invasions. The excesses were condoned even celebrated for spreading the word of God.
However even then there was familiarity. Islam arose from a bleak landscape, a product of harsh climate, infertile land and a tribal society. Hence there was never a hesitation or embarrassment against using violence. While it was not necessarily the first measure, it was by no means something which was to be eschewed. Hence there was no coyness about sword, on the contrary it was approved, massacres of infidels celebrated in epics. The downside of this was that the victim was always aware of subjugation and given a chance will strike back.
The next change was English colonialism, however there was a difference, British came for wealth and they very well knew it.
But because the English middle class was a product of enlightenment, it could not admit subjugation of natives for selfish reasons, because it went against ideals of the age.
Therefore, a elaborate fiction was manufactured, that of white man's burden, where colonialism existed not because of greed of masters, but for the savage natives improvement.
Where the oppression was inflicted with a heavy heart in order to bring light of true civilization (and true God) to the unwashed barbarian.
The right to rule based on superiority of race.
This project succeeded beyond wildest dreams, the intellectual of India lost his ability to think, now no original insights were to be gained, instead what passed for ideas, a rehashing of Europe. Divested of pride and consciousness, the Indian was doomed to view the world in terms of masters, the context to problem was borrowed without discrimination, even the problems were copied with the result an intellectual who was just a poor imitation of Europe.
It is thus that even after half a century we still have debates on whether colonialism was good for India.
The dhimmification did not stop at this, after British came the tyranny of socialist / communist.
However there was no power, at least not one which was obvious, neither electoral, nor muscular.
What they had instead was intellectual capital. A generation of intellectual uprooted from its history by the colonialism, unable now to make any sense of India, and deprived of its masters and benefactors. These resident non Indians, appropriated the moral high ground, and started subjugation of India, this time intellectual.
For this they turned man's kindness against himself, using his nobler disposition to bind him. As Maugham said in entirely different context, it was tyranny of weak over the strong. Poverty was turned into a moral virtue and wealth a cardinal sin, by this inversion of natural order of things, the negation of instincts which provide the vigour for human enterprise, the intention was to stultify the Indian spirit, thus establish unquestioned monopoly. Also the creed of minority-ism whereby, the Muslims were accorded a moral high ground, an unquestioned relief from criticism just on the status of their religion. Hence the principle of equality was subverted from within.
It is this which has perverted India, corrupted her soul. India suffers from poverty of idea, for no new idea is to be found, because the fount of intellect has been destroyed by the barbarians.
If India is to forge ahead it is this shackles of guilt, of moral slavery which must be thrown away,
and yet it seems most unlikely.

most people will be like that... unless we change our education system to reflect scientific ways of thinking. unfortunately right now our kids are taught not to ask too many questions because that's just the way it is.
well things may be changing now but that's what it was like for me growing up. don't know if anything is different in schools in india today.
You cannot change people in a jiff. I am from Sri Lanka. From childhood we were taught not to ask questions. This is the main problem. Loosing of individuality and depending on others. People of our region are brainwashed to be like that.
I live in Australia now. I see the difference clearly. Now the society is changing. The way new generation thinks have obviously changed in Sri Lanka. I think India too. They are proud to be Indians or Sri Lankans whatever.
Mosilager,
I don't know, may be education is the problem.
Mahesha,
Well it has been five decades since independence hardly a jiffy.

Well, but then, dont forget - India is a house of war. It has to be brought under Islam. This has been so for a thousand years, and I dont see it changing in near future.
Shadows,
Well, life is war inside and outside, this is how nature works
Anon,
Where did peace come from ? I have not mentioned peace anywhere.
While I do admire your leaps of logic, do take care lest you injure youself.
G
a mixed bag of emotions I carried to your porch...I would negate u this moment, n then laud u next moment...
it begins thus...
I resist this, the other vanquished, need not necessarily be categorized as the subservient. this person fought a battle, gave a tough match, and faced defeat with a smile. Well, it all depends on who defines the victory. Immoral superiority does exist as well, when the sensible loser is forced not to lead his regular existence, but to stay in that inexplicable shadows, waiting for the right time to make the move to snatch the power from this guffawing winner.
...now the bed of roses!
Islam arose from a bleak landscape, a product of harsh climate, infertile land and a tribal society. Hence there was never a hesitation or embarrassment against using violence...
So vivid in your expression! Excellent way of putting across things....
Now the Barbarians...
Because the barbarians are to arrive today.
What laws can the Senators pass any more?
When the barbarians come they will make the laws.
Why did our emperor wake up so early,
and sits at the greatest gate of the city,
on the throne, solemn, wearing the crown?
Because the barbarians are to arrive today.
And the emperor waits to receive
their chief. Indeed he has prepared
to give him a scroll. Therein he inscribed
many titles and names of honor.
Why have our two consuls and the praetors come out
today in their red, embroidered togas;
why do they wear amethyst-studded bracelets,
and rings with brilliant, glittering emeralds;
why are they carrying costly canes today,
wonderfully carved with silver and gold?
Because the barbarians are to arrive today,
and such things dazzle the barbarians....
*lovely thoughts by Cavafy!
I tend to agree with you on the subjugation of different kind being manufactured by Intellectuals across the blue colored fence.Agreed to work like brown-skinned workers in the technology factories, dizzingly taller money-minting/recycling institutions and visit the country with a huge fanfare, getting habituated to subtler cues of racial discrimination n struggle n wither with their inability to become part of the salmon white mainstream (as that group fervently protects its territory) and disenchantment with the true colors. when would these mimics realise that the real growth comes in planting the seeds of intellectualism in one's soil and exult in delight when the seeds flourish to yield brown an intellectual revolution...elusive a dream when the economies are jumping into global money culture and Indian diaspora chickening out on the red carpet....
ye,sounds too illogical what i wrote. u know am a bit irritated!
J,
I am speechless :-)
speechless?...I have no ability to understand that "sense of loss" in a pair of eyes and incoherent ramblings of a mind, tch tch, intelligent mind...
I demand a string of words from you Ah my Dictator!
