No it's not...

only about "reproductive right". In fact it is hardly about any right.

If you must know 22nd of this month was 35th anniversary of Roe vs Wade which legalized abortion in US as a constitutional right. And it stinks.

For instance almost all the arguements which are given for abortion can be given for infanticide. Taking care of infants does constrain mother, it does mean more expenditure, so what next, start killing babies.

"Wait", Someone is going to say, "killing baby and abortion is not the same ". And that is what debate should be about. When does the life start ? This is a subjective matter, and the answer is not clear to me at all.

I don't think that life begins when sperm and egg fuse to form a single zygote, so I am not at all impressed with "Life begins at conception because the book says so" side. However to me even more off putting (even repugnant) is pro-abortion position essentially pretending that life begins at delivery. This is crazy talk !

And this is where Roe Vs. Wade was out of the line, it was an stretch to interpret fourteenth amendment to cover abortion. Abortion should have been a matter of constitutional amendment at federal or state level. As it is due to this decision, abortion laws in Europe a much liberal place are much more strict than US.

Anyhow it is this liberal fetish to stretch sensible arguements to absurd limits in order to achieve some fictitious level of parity between gender, in the process vitiating against common sense and common dense, which is disfiguring liberalism from somewhat flawed ideology to a disturbing and a desensitized fetish of overeducated people.

PS. This whole abortion issue has hardly anything to do with India, but still is one that interests me partly because I am politics addict and partly because I am a card carrying holder of VMCPC to keep womyn in their place.

If you believe (rightly so )that the debate should be about where life begins, you really should not have much problems with the pro-choice lobby.

Abortion (or in its more politically sanitised form, MTP)is anyway allowed only upto the second trimester. Have you ever heard about an eight month old foetus being medically terminated?

Can you condense the paragraph on liberal fetish to a catchy line? I'd like to have that on a t-shirt.

Ritwik,

The problem is because pro-abortion lobby refuses to accept what the debate is about. And I think that 2nd trimester is too late for abortion.

The wikipedia article on Abortion says that 32% in Canada and 27% in US believe that abortion should be legal under *all* circumstances. The US act banning partial birth abortion was enacted only in 2003 - and the wikipedia article on the act says that 137 democrats and 4 republicans opposed the ban! Do you think this is humane?

And in US only 79% men and 67% women believe that spousal notification ( forget spousal consent ) is needed. Woman technically has the right to either deny the guy a child or slap paternity on him - if the argument is that the guy had the freedom not to fuck around, the same applies to woman also, right? [ this view of mine seems to have hardly any takers].

And then, of course, if the debate were to be about when life begins, why would so many pro-choicers talk about "right of body" and that a fetus in the womb of a woman has no independent existence and hence no right to live?
